Ethiopia, 30 January 2026 The African Union has called on all parties in Ethiopia’s Tigray region to exercise maximum restraint, warning against any actions that could undermine the fragile peace process.
In a statement, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said he is closely monitoring the evolving situation in parts of Tigray and expressed deep concern over the latest developments.
Youssouf underscored the continued and critical importance of preserving the hard-won gains achieved under the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, brokered by the African Union between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, and signed in Pretoria on 2 November 2022.

He urged all parties to refrain from measures that could erode trust, calling instead for outstanding issues to be resolved through constructive dialogue and full adherence to both the letter and spirit of the agreement.
The African Union reaffirmed its firm commitment to the full and effective implementation of the Pretoria accord, stressing that it will continue to support all parties throughout the peacebuilding and national reconciliation process.
In this context, the AU said its High-Level Panel on Ethiopia stands ready to intensify efforts to facilitate dialogue, cooperation, and confidence-building among the parties, in support of achieving lasting peace and stability in the Tigray region.
