Ethiopia, 15 December 2026 The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the signing of Libya’s Peace and National Reconciliation Charter by the President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Younes Al-Menfi, in Tripoli on 7 January 2025, describing the step as an important milestone in advancing peace and stability in the country.
Youssouf praised the commitment embodied in the signing, noting that it serves the peace process and national reconciliation and represents a decisive step toward achieving lasting peace in Libya.
He called on all Libyan parties to demonstrate full commitment and to engage constructively and in good faith, guided by responsibility, dialogue, and tolerance, so that national interests prevail over all other considerations.

The AU Commission Chair reaffirmed the African Union’s full support for Libya and its people, stressing the Union’s determination to continue its sustained efforts to achieve durable peace in the country.
He emphasized that implementing the Peace and National Reconciliation Charter is a top priority and a firm commitment of the African Union, noting that the Charter was signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025 under the auspices of the AU.
He also reiterated the African Union’s full support for the new UN-led roadmap on Libya, under the auspices of the United Nations.
