Kenya, September 18, 2026 - At least two people have been confirmed dead and many more critically injured after a petroleum tanker overturned, then exploded in a massive fireball near Paul Boit Secondary School along the Eldoret–Webuye Highway on Thursday evening.
Most of the victims were among a crowd that had rushed to siphon spilled fuel from the stranded tanker before it burst into flames, leaving several burnt beyond recognition at the scene.
The incident unfolded in the Juakali area, a few kilometres from Paul Boit Boys High School, when the fuel tanker was involved in a road accident and overturned on the busy highway. Eyewitnesses said local residents quickly gathered with jerrycans and buckets to scoop the leaking petrol, a common but dangerous response to such spills. Minutes later, the tanker exploded, engulfing the crowd in a massive fireball. Those at the scene described chaos as people ran for their lives while others were trapped under the burning wreckage.
Medical personnel at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret reported that the majority of admitted patients had sustained severe burns covering more than 70 percent of their bodies. First responders and disaster management teams faced the difficult task of retrieving several bodies that remained trapped under the charred wreckage hours after the blast. While the exact death toll remains unconfirmed, Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sichirani said search and recovery operations were continuing and more fatalities were feared. The Kenya Red Cross described the incident as a mass casualty event and deployed teams to support police and firefighters at the scene. At least 10 casualties were evacuated to various hospitals following the explosion, according to early reports.
This is not an isolated tragedy. Tanker accidents followed by fuel-scrambling and explosions recur along Kenya’s major highways because the incentives and infrastructure around them have not changed. For many residents, spilled fuel looks like free money. A few litres can cover school fees, medical bills, or a week’s expenses. That short-term gain overrides the abstract risk of fire. There is rarely a standing protocol that secures a spill site within minutes. Police, firefighters, and highway patrol often arrive after crowds have already gathered with containers. Fuel siphoning from accident scenes has become a familiar spectacle. People treat it as routine rather than lethal, until the explosion happens. Major transport corridors move huge volumes of fuel, but emergency response capacity, spill containment kits, and rapid cordon systems are inconsistent. The result is a window of time where fuel spreads, people gather, and ignition becomes likely.
Structurally, the problem is not just “careless individuals.” It is a system where the reward for collecting fuel is immediate and tangible, the cost of securing the scene is delayed, diffuse, and under-resourced, and the consequences are borne by the poorest participants, while the supply chain and enforcement structures absorb little direct penalty.

Police cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and allow emergency operations to continue. Traffic along the Eldoret–Webuye corridor was temporarily paralysed as security officers managed the scene and diverted vehicles. County and national emergency teams remained on site late into the night, working to extinguish residual fires and recover remains from the wreckage.
Cosmetic warnings and occasional media campaigns do not change the underlying mechanics. Structural fixes would look more like pre-positioned rapid response units with spill containment kits, foam, and fast cordon equipment stationed along high-risk stretches; a standing order that treats any fuel spill on a highway as a high-risk incident requiring immediate perimeter control, with penalties for breaching the cordon; local reporting and assistance rewarded, while participation in siphoning treated as a serious offence with visible enforcement; and regular audits of tanker conditions, driver training, and routing to reduce overturns in the first place.
Until the system around these accidents changes, the pattern will repeat: accident, spill, crowd, explosion, bodies burnt beyond recognition, then silence until the next one.
