Somalia, July 28 2026 – Algeria is preparing to reopen its embassy in Mogadishu for the first time since 1985, as newly appointed ambassador Mohamed Alim arrived in the Somali capital to begin his diplomatic mission, Somalia's state news agency SONNA reported on Monday.
The reopening will restore Algeria's resident diplomatic presence in Somalia after nearly four decades and reflects growing ties between the two countries.
Alim was received at Aden Adde International Airport by Somalia's Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hamse Aden Hadow, Somalia's ambassador to Algeria, Yusuf Ahmed Hassan, Arab ambassadors accredited to Somalia and representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
"We hope to further strengthen relations between the two countries and move them to a higher level while working together to protect our shared interests," Hamse told reporters during the reception.

Alim thanked the Somali government, Arab diplomats and the OIC delegation for welcoming him and said he looked forward to working closely with them.
"I thank the Arab ambassadors who came to the airport to receive me. I greatly appreciate this warm welcome," Alim said. "We will have opportunities to meet soon to discuss everything that serves the interests of our two countries and the broader Arab and Islamic community."
The planned reopening follows Somalia's inauguration of a new embassy building in Algiers in 2025 and is expected to deepen cooperation between the two countries on diplomatic, political and regional issues.
