ASMARA, 3 October 2026 — Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has departed for Egypt for a working visit at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Information Minister Yemane Gebreab Meskel said on Saturday.
Afwerki will participate in a summit of heads of state focused on collective security, stability and partnership, Meskel said in a post on X.
The summit is a continuation of periodic forums on the wider neighbourhood, including the Red Sea region, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Gulf and the Nile Basin, he said.
Afwerki and Sisi will also discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral ties during the visit.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has already arrived in Egypt to attend the Alamein Africa Forum, which is expected to bring together more than 20 heads of state and government or their representatives.
Dawan previously reported that while in Cairo, Hassan Sheikh is expected to attend a four-way meeting involving Sisi, Afwerki, Hassan Sheikh and Sudanese leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The expected meeting comes as the Horn of Africa faces a range of security and diplomatic issues involving Ethiopia, Eritrea, Egypt and Sudan.
