Kenya, 24 December 2025 - Burkina Faso produced one of the most dramatic finishes of AFCON 2025 so far, rallying from behind to secure a 2–1 victory over ten-man Equatorial Guinea in their Group E opener at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
The closely contested match remained locked at 0-0 until the 71st minute, when Burkifaso scored what they believed to be an opener, only to be ruled out for offside.
Equatorial Guinea looked on course for a major shock in the tournament’s early rounds when Marvin Anieboh headed his side into the lead in the 85th minute, capitalising on a set-piece to put the underdogs ahead against superior opponents. Despite being reduced to ten men following a second-half red card, the National Thunder defended resolutely and appeared poised to take the lead into full-time.

However, Burkina Faso’s never-say-die attitude paid off spectacularly deep into stoppage time. With the match played for over minutes into stoppage time and Equatorial Guinea nearly sure of a win, something unbelievable happened. In the 95th minute, Georgi Minoungou slotted home a close-range finish to level the score, sending the crowd into raptures and turning the tie on its head. Just three minutes later, Edmond Tapsoba headed home to complete the turnaround and spark wild celebrations among the Stallions faithful.
The victory clearly showed Burkina Faso’s resilience and ability to fight until the final whistle, even when facing adverse circumstances such as a numerical disadvantage and a late deficit. It also sets them up strongly in Group E, where points are precious as teams jostle for qualification to the knockout stages.
Equatorial Guinea, despite their spirited performance and early advantage, will be left to rue their inability to close out the match, especially after holding the lead so late and defending well with ten men. Their resilience, however, showed that they are not to be underestimated as the tournament progresses.
