ELDORET, Kenya, 21 October 2026 Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has called for stronger cooperation between Ethiopia and Kenya, highlighting their shared history of courage, unity and sacrifice.
Abiy was speaking during Kenya’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret on Tuesday where he paid tribute to those who fought for Kenya’s freedom and those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the nation.
He drew parallels between Kenya’s struggle for independence and Ethiopia’s historic victory at the Battle of Adwa, where Ethiopians from different parts of the country united to defend their homeland.
Abiy said the histories of both nations demonstrate that freedom was achieved through courage, unity and sacrifice. He stressed the importance of building on these historical ties to strengthen relations between Addis Ababa and Nairobi.
The Ethiopian leader also called for deeper bilateral cooperation in clean energy, connectivity, telecommunications and trade. He said continued collaboration in these sectors would create greater opportunities and promote shared prosperity for the people of both countries.
Mashujaa Day is observed annually in Kenya to honour national heroes, including those who contributed to the country's struggle for independence and the protection of its sovereignty.
