JOWHAR, 22 October 2026 — Members of the Hirshabelle State House of Representatives on Thursday evening re-elected Abdihakim Luqman Haji Mohamed as speaker.
Abdihakim received 77 votes in a vote held in Jowhar.
MP Abdirahman Abdi Iidow was elected first deputy speaker, while MP Jama Ali Mohamud was elected second deputy speaker. Neither faced a challenger, as only one candidate registered for each position.
Abdihakim Luqman has served as speaker of the Hirshabelle House since 4 November 2020. Before entering parliament, he worked at the Somali Embassy in Sudan.
Abdirahman Abdi Iidow previously served as Hirshabelle’s Deputy Minister of Health and Social Care, a post to which he was appointed by President Ali Gudlawe in 2022.
The new house comprises 99 members, who were sworn in on 20 October in Jowhar. It is the first time Hirshabelle has had members of parliament elected through the one-person one-vote system.
The Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP), led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, won 78 of the 99 seats in the 30 September election.
The election of the speakership will be followed by the election of Hirshabelle’s president and vice president, scheduled for 24 October.
