Somalia, 10 October 2026 Residents and young people in Aato have joined forces to install solar-powered streetlights, illuminating roads that were previously dark after sunset in a community-led initiative funded entirely through their own contributions.
The streetlights were officially switched on on Friday, 9 October 2026, marking a visible change in the local environment. According to Koonfurgalbeed Television, neither the government nor international aid organisations contributed financially to the installation.Arab Abdi Hassan, a resident of Aato, expressed pride in the initiative, crediting local residents and young people for working together to make the project possible.
“I am here tonight in Aato, where the streetlights have been made possible by young people and residents who came together and helped themselves. The lights have officially been switched on tonight. Aato is shining, and its young people are shining too,” he said.
His remarks reflected the sense of achievement surrounding the project, which brought residents together around a shared goal of making their community brighter after dark.

While the project’s long-term impact remains to be seen, its immediate result is visible: roads that were once dark are now illuminated by solar-powered streetlights.
For Aato’s residents, the achievement carries a simple message: when a community works together, even a modest initiative can make a visible difference.
