This is the most significant site for indentured labor in the world.
Global significance:#
It's the birthplace of modern indentured labor. The first site chosen by the British Government in 1834 for the "Great Experiment", replacing slavery with contract labor.
The site stands as the sole surviving example of this unique modern diaspora.
Everything else that followed can be traced back here. Over 2.2 million indentured laborers moved worldwide to the Caribbean, South America, the South Pacific, and Southeast Asia because of what started at Aapravasi Ghat.
The buildings are among the earliest explicit manifestations of what would become a global economic system.
Mauritian significance:#
Aapravasi Ghat is an important symbol of Mauritian identity. Ancestors of more than 70% of today's Mauritian population arrived through this immigration depot.
Nearly half a million immigrants climbed up the steps between 1849 and 1910.
It's tangible evidence of the peopling of Mauritius and the shaping process of modern Mauritian identity.
For most islanders, this site carries the story of their family history.
Historical significance:#
From 1834 to 1910, Mauritius received the greatest number of indentured laborers—more than Guyana, South Africa, Trinidad, Cuba, Peru, and Reunion Island.
Ninety-five percent came from India, but laborers were also recruited from Africa, Madagascar, China, and Southeast Asia.
The site represents not only the development of the modern system of contractual labor, but also the memories, traditions, and values that men, women, and children carried with them to foreign lands.
UNESCO recognition:#
Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2006 under Criterion (vi).
It represents a major historic testimony of indenture in the 19th century.
Identity transformation:#
Before 2006, it was seen as a local ethnic emblem. After UNESCO inscription, it transformed into a global symbol of indentured labor.
The 2006 inscription, and Le Morne's 2008 listing ,changed how heritage is perceived in Mauritius. It integrated the experience of formerly dominated segments of the population into the national narrative.
The site holds great symbolic meaning for millions of descendants worldwide.
