Somalia, 9 December 2025 – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with David Miliband, President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), on Tuesday to discuss expanding humanitarian aid amid a severe drought affecting parts of the country.
The Prime Minister’s office said the talks focused on strategies to deliver urgent assistance to an estimated 4.4 million Somalis in need. Discussions also included ways to strengthen long-term development initiatives. The IRC will expand humanitarian support to the hardest-hit communities, continue ongoing development projects, and advocate internationally for Somalia.
“Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre praised Mr. David Miliband and the IRC for basing their work on sustainable solutions,” his office said. The statement added that the government is committed to helping all Somalis achieve self-sufficiency while working with the international community to support this goal.

In a statement on 25 November, the IRC said it was providing healthcare for malnourished children, unconditional cash transfers, rehabilitating boreholes and water sources, and delivering mobile health services across Banadir, Puntland, South-West, Jubaland, and Hirshabelle regions.
The organization urged global leaders to fully fund the Somalia Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), which it said is less than 25 per cent financed, with less than a month remaining in the year.
