Ethiopia, 29 November 2025 - The Ethiopian government says the appointment of Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos as President of the 32nd UN Climate Change Conference (COP32) reflects renewed international confidence in the role the country now plays in global climate affairs.
In a press briefing in Addis Ababa, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Nebiat Getachew stated that Ethiopia’s selection for this high-level international position is growing recognition of its diplomatic efforts in recent years.
He noted that the country has shifted from being a participant in climate discussions to becoming an influential actor that leads initiatives and shapes regional positions, particularly at the African level.
Getachew highlighted Ethiopia’s expanding presence in key areas such as energy transition, food security, and green development—issues that lie at the heart of international cooperation.

Getachew said the government is strengthening national preparations to host the conference and its accompanying events, including showcasing Ethiopia’s own sustainability initiatives and climate programs, and attracting broader international support for its environmental projects.
According to the Spokesperson , Ethiopia no longer responds to climate developments reactively but has become a proactive player that builds regional and international partnerships based on mutual benefit and stability. He stressed that the international community now views Ethiopia as a trusted partner in the global climate governance system.
Getachew concluded by saying that Ethiopia’s COP32 presidency strengthens the country’s diplomatic standing and positions it to play a greater role in shaping policies and approaches that balance economic growth with climate sustainability.
